Dear Mariners ...

The contribution of lighthouses, which guide mariners with their lights and physical structures throughout history, into maritime safety has been gradually increasing by the methods of high technology provided by information age that we are living.

Works which intended for the protection of marine environment and enhancement of navigation safety at administrational and operational structuring have been increasingly continuing by support and leadership of our Minister of Transport, Mr. Binali Yıldırım in our all seas.

As Directorate General of Coastal Safety, we have been making an effort to meet advance technology with marine communication systems, lighthouses, other aids to navigation and maritime traffic which is effectively conducted in the region of Turkish Straits. We are rendering our services 7 days 24 hours as an organization which inspires confidence by qualified manpower and a series of investments at operational area in its region.

Once again, I would like to touch on some subjects because of the winter season in which we live. As it is known, there is an increase in dangers that vessels can face in winter, and vessel conditions play an important role in the formation of these dangers. This danger is well known by the master who commands and operates the vessel .The master who commands and control, the vessel, is the only one who can evaluate her vessel’s own means. Especially masters coming from Black Sea Ports to Turkish Straits, should evaluate the condition of vessel, the adequacy of personnel, performance of equipments and devices, and make navigation planning by taking the winter conditions into consideration as a cautious master. Meteorological warnings are periodically made by Turkish Radio through VHF, NAVTEX channels and Turkish Straits Vessel Traffic Services. All of these warnings have a great importance and should be considered by masters.

I would like to repeat a reminder that I expressed before. The vessels using the region should navigate carefully and take into consideration the warnings and alerts in terms of the safety of life, property and environment. Increasing currents because of the northern high winds in winter are the most important thing that should be considered and masters should be very careful during the course. In addition, I strongly recommend to the vessels passing through the Straits ; to benefit from the services rendered by Turkish Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and pay attention to the information/recommendation/instructions given by VTS not only for their own safety but also for safety of other vessels and to act in accordance with Turkish Straits Maritime Traffic Separation Scheme Regulation and relevant national and international rules, to give accurate information in a timely manner, to take pilots, to use escort tugs for unpredictable risky situations and accident possibility.

Dear mariners, please do not forget the statement that we try to make our principle:
"YOUR OWN SAFETY IS OUR PRIORITY"

I wish you calm winds and glassy seas. Have a nice voyage.
